UIC MOLECULAR & CELLULAR BIOLOGY TRAINING PROGRAM

Molecular and Cellular biology as a field is characterized by the interaction between many areas of research, including cell growth and differentiation, cancer, developmental biology, gene regulation, immunology, DNA and protein structure and function and signal transduction. As we move from the era of cloning genes to one in which we understand their role in biological systems, the overlap between these different fields is increasing.

The Graduate Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology is an interdisciplinary umbrella organization whose goal is to foster individual interdisciplinary NIH-funded training programs at the UIC campus. At present the Molecular and Cellular Biology Training Program has successfully promoted the establishment and NIH-funding of a training program in Signal Transduction and Endocrinology. Other training grants are in preparation.

At the University of Illinois College of Medicine, the Molecular and Cellular Biology Training Program brings together over 40 faculty members with common and diverse interests from the departments of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Biochemistry , Genetics , Microbiology and Immunology , Pharmacology and Physiology and Biophysics . The participating faculty members at the University of Illinois have distinguished training and research records and are nationally and internationally recognized. They collectively have received more than $8,500,000 in research funding (direct costs) from external sources in the last fiscal year.

The specialized research facilities of the different departments have well-equipped labs and well-supervised animal care units that are designed to support all aspects of the Training Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Specially designed facilities and equipment include freezer and cold rooms, radioisotope rooms, NMR spectroscopy, electron microscopy, mass spectrometry, extensive mammalian cell-culture rooms and hoods, scintillation counters, ultracentrifuge rooms, and instrumentation appropriate for peptide and nucleotide sequencing. The University provides computer resourses important for the operation and processing of data from all of its divisions. The Library of Health Sciences is one of the largest medical sciences libraries in the United States.

The Molecular and Cellular Biology Training Program seeks enthusiastic, dedicated individuals who will be prepared for leading careers in life sciences whether their goals include academia, industry or teaching. To receive additional information please contact Peter Gettins
