Welcome
to the Department of Family Medicine
The Department
of Family Medicine is committed to quality medical
student education and is actively involved in the
teaching of all four years in the undergraduate program.
The faculty also serve as advisors to the Family Medicine
Interest Group and sponsors students to attend various
regional and national meetings.
The Family Medicine
faculty teach small groups during the Essentials of
Clinical Medicine (ECM) course (M1 and M2) and also
in the Nutrition course (M1). We mount the workshop
on Sex and Substance abuse (using real patients with
real problems who are trained through the Patients
as Teachers program), and assist the Department of
Orthopedics in the musculoskeletal
medicine workshops (also utilizing real patients with
real problems) during the ECM course. All of the faculty
accept Longitudinal Primary Care students (for the
M1 to M3 years), and serve as advisors to students
interested in a career in Family Medicine. The department
mounts a required 6-week clerkship during the third
year and offers elective experiences during the fourth
year. We also encourage students to have self-designed
international experiences during their fourth year
as long as there is involvement by Family Physicians.
In the past we have had students do electives in Tanzania,
Ghana, Australia, South America, Mexico, China and
other countries. Closer to home we also have students
who worked in rural Illinois or on Indian reservations
during their fourth year.
