PGY3 Curriculum
In the PGY3 year, group experiences include developing the management and leadership skills needed in clinical practice. Residents continue provide care to their own patients in the Family Medicine Centers during four half–day weekly sessions. In addition, the third year residents continue participation in the weekly Family Medicine educational sessions.
A unique two month Surgical Subspecialities rotation represents a Family Medicine–based approach to problems in otolaryngology, ophthalmology and urology. Two months as the senior resident on the Family Medicine inpatient service provide time to refine inpatient and teaching skills. Five months of electives are tailored to the residents’ future needs, and may include research, community health projects, clinical rotations at UIMC or other UIC affiliate hospitals. Special electives outside the Chicago area, including international rotations, can be arranged individually.

Outpatient/Back Up Call
Second and third year residents perform Outpatient/Back up call from home one out of every 12 nights on average. This call includes telephone medicine and back up responsibilities for admissions and labor and delivery triage visits. Residents on Outpatient/Back up call come to the hospital approximately once monthly, on average, during outpatient hours.

These rotations are offered on specialty services within University of Illinois Medical Center, but can also be arranged at affiliated hospitals when educationally advantageous.
