- We value our patients, our residents , our faculty and staff as human beings first. We have developed our clinical work and our educational program to support our members in mind, body and spirit.
- We are the only Family Medicine residency in the Chicago area that admits to the main university hospital. We practice and learn up to date evidence based world class health care.
- Our Community Medicine program spans all three years. This prepares our residents to understand and utilize family and community resources to help our patients to better health.
- Our experienced and diverse faculty represents the full diversity of American society, ethnically, culturally and by faith. We follow passions reflecting the full spectrum of Family Medicine, including Obstetrics, Sports Medicine, Geriatrics, Pediatrics, full spectrum gynecologic and reproductive care, hospital care, emergency care and procedural medicine.
- Our faculty to resident ratio is greater than 1:1. We believe we have the most well rounded residency faculty in the region.
- Residents in our program experience two different but complementary clinic sites. Our undeserved focus at the federally qualified Mile Square Health Center is complemented by providing care for a highly educated and insured population at our University Village site. We prepare our graduates to provide care that anyone, regardless of background, can have confidence in.
- We utilize an Electronic Medical Records systems in all of our facilities.
- Our clinical sites are close to one another so that little driving is required between rotation and continuity sites.
- We have a well established "night float" system for our inpatient service which reduces in-house overnight call to less than every eighth night during the first year, on average.
- Our orientation activities for interns include four weeks of educational and group activities without hospital duties, two weeks in July and two weeks in February.
- We strongly believe in the importance of resident support. Each first year resident chooses a Faculty Mentor from volunteer faculty. All first year residents participate in a R1 Support Group once monthly. Resident "socials" are also held on a regular basis. Brief facilitated inpatient team meetings are held monthly.
- Our half day of educational sessions each week is comprised of innovative, interactive, evidence-based, university level teaching and learning.
- UIC offers transitional housing for incoming residents who will be relocating to or even within Chicago to ease their transition before beginning training.
- Our program allows the maximum amount of vacation yearly, scheduled by the residents during PGY2 & PGY3.
- Tuition is free for Master's degree course work at UIC . Master's work, including for an MPH degree may be conducted during residency.
