ASM Honors Aspiring Microbiologists

ASM (Aug 2007): The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the most prestigious science competition for high school students, was held this year in Albuquerque, N.M., in May. Approximately 1,500 students from 40 countries compete annually for scholarships, internships, grants, science equipment, and prizes, and ASM sponsors special awards in microbiology. ASM judges Steven Finkel (University of Southern California), Nancy Freitag (University of Illinois at Chicago), and Paul Kiem (Northern Arizona University) reviewed the microbiology projects and were impressed by the caliber of the students’ science.

$22 million gift for immunology College of Medicine's largest

UIC News (Jun 2007): A $22 million estate gift commitment from a Texas physician and his wife — the largest gift ever to the College of Medicine and the largest individual gift in UIC history — will help support medical research, education and treatment in immunology.

The gift from James and Marion Grant of Austin, Texas, will establish the Dr. James A. and Marion C. Grant Program in Basic and Applied Immunity and two Dr. James A. and Marion C. Grant Endowed Chairs.

Immigrant Honored at Navy Ship Naming

BATH, Maine (AP) — Le T. Phung credits the USS Sterett with saving her life: The ship rescued her after a week adrift in the South China Sea when she fled Vietnam nearly 25 years ago.

On Saturday, Phung was the matron of honor for the christening of the latest Navy warship to bear the Sterett name: a 510-foot destroyer. It is the fourth warship named after Lt. Andrew Sterett, who served aboard the frigate Constellation during the U.S. Navy's first victory against a foreign navy.

The Financial Express (Dec 2006): Distinguished professor Ananda Mohan Chakrabarty, now at the department of microbiology and immunology at the University of Illinois, Chicago, drew worldwide attention when he applied for the first patent on a genetically engineered organism in 1971. So controversial was his crude oil-eating bacterium, that his patent wasn’t cleared until 1981 following a ruling by the US Supreme Court. Prof Chakrabarty’s landmark research has since paved the way for many successive patents for genetically modified micro-organisms, and catapulted him into the international spotlight. Apart from being a scientist extraordinaire and professor, Chakrabarty has been an advisor to judges, governments, and the UN.
