| Although born on a British island of a French mother and an Irish American father, he spent most of his life traveling between the British island of Mauritius, France, England and the United States. Initially he was interested in gastroenterology but he will always be associated as a clinician on his syndrome following spinal cord hemisection. A second important neurological observation attributed to Brown-Séquard is the sympathetic nervous system response in stimulating cervical sympathetic nerves in rabbits. He was also known as a fine educator not only in Great Britain but also in the United States where he occupied a chair at Harvard in 1866. | ![]() |
