DR. CHARLES FOIX
(1882-1927)

As one of the great neurologists that France contributed, he died young but his name will be remembered as prominent in the study of lesions of vascular origin. He contributed to the knowledge on the vascular supply of midbrain and the interbrain. With others he established the role of the substantia nigra in Parkinsonism. He described intracerebral centrolobular sclerosis. Also he is responsible for the knowledge of rhythmic myoclonus of the palate, larynx, pharynx and other brain stem innervated structures. After World War I he was placed in charge of a tuberculosis service in which he did very well as he did in research onsplenic anemias. He even wrote brilliant poetry dealing with the classics.
