| Born in Switzerland his medical training was both in his native land and in Germany. He was identified early as a physiologist and a comparative anatomist. He is known as a famous biologist in the study of the finer structure of the nervous system and his publications on structures with special attaining are classics. He also formulated that nerve fibers are secondary to nerve cells and developmental anatomy especially of the eye and ear are monumental.
