DR. CHARLES LASÉGUE
(1816-1883)

Born in France, Laségue studied medicine and early on was a clinician. But while working at the Salpetriere his interest turned to neurology- even to psychiatry which was initially his forte. He wrote on hysteria, delusions, folie-a-deux, catalepsy, even exhibitionism. He wrote a classic work on Les Cerebraux dealing with vascular disturbances of the brain. The Laségue sign ascribed to him although there is some dispute that others preceded him in their descriptions. He was a great friend of the arts.
