| Born in Germany, he received his education there. Early in his medical pursuit, he began to manifest in chemistry and physiology. He was one of the discoverers of the diuretic effects of pituitary extracts. Later he turned to research on automatic rhythm, local reflexes and the responses to certain alkaloids. Magnus, together with Charles Scott Sherington, collaborated on the study of reflex mechanisms in the central nervous system. Together with de Kleijin they described a classic sign in decerebration and they collaborated in studies of motion sickness. His studies on the labyrinthine mechanisms are classic.
