DR. GREGOR JOHANN MENDEL
(1822-1884)

Johann Mendel was born in Austria. While a boy he was instilled with the spirit of gardening. He studied at the Philosophic Institute de Olmutz and then entered the Althorümm monastery as a novice. He studied theology and eventually became a priest. He became a teacher and then started in his interest in experiments with hybrids from many different species. In the monastery he did his famous work formulating the laws of genetics. Recovering from a depression he began his important work with peas from which he formulated laws. His first law is the "Law of Segregation." His second law is the "Law of Independant Assortmant." There was considerable on his principles of inheritance, but he was far ahead of his time. He later did research in meteorology. But his hypotheses have evolved into genetic laws that have advanced man’s knowledge of biology.
