DR. HEINRICH OBERSTEINER
(1847-1922)

Born in Vienna, Austria, eventually he studied medicine at the University of Vienna and did research in anatomy and pathology of the nervous system. He founded the Wiener Neurologische Institut in 1882 and some 400 graduate students from everywhere in the world came to study with him. He made the classical description of concussion of the spinal cord;, described status epilepticus, wrote an important volume on general paresis and tabes dorsalis. He wrote a classic neurology text on the anatomy of the nervous system. He published much on nerve fibers, granular cells of the cerebellum and on pigment in nerve cells. With Emil Redlich he demonstrated that tabes dorsalis is a disease of the posterior roots. He will be remembered as a great neuropathologist.
