Spielmeyer was born in Germany and was educated early in psychiatry before moving on to succeed Alzheimer as head of the anatomisches Laboratorium der Psychiatrischenaul Nervenklivik.. He studied peripheral nerve injuries and he wrote a book beautifully illustrated "Histopathologie des Neurvensystems." He investigated disturbed brain function due to temporary circulation disturbances. He wrote considerably on topics like trypanosomasis, tuberosclerosis and typhus. He worked with his many assistants, all of whom he furthered in their career.
