DR. FELIX VICQ d’ AZYR
(1748-1794)

Vicq d’Azyr of France was educated in his native land. Early in his career he determined that he would be a neuroanatomist and his treatises helped lay the foundation for neuroanatomy. He was one of the first to section the brain horizontally. He is credited with rediscovering the white line in the calcerine cortex. He created one of the most classic anatomic folios of the brain. By fixing the brain in alcohol he demonstrated ease in dissection. He identified for the first time many of the cerebral convolutions, as he did the deep gray nuclei of the cerebrum and basal ganglia. The mamillo thalamic trait was also described by him and bears his name. Again his atlas is one of the finest available in neurological literature.
