Clinical Fellowship

The Department is able to offer several types of clinical fellowships.

 

Post-Residency Fellowship
Cerebrovascular

Program Title:
Clinical Fellowship in Cerebrovascular Surgery

Sponsoring Department:
Department of Neurosurgery, The University of Illinois at Chicago

Participants:
Post-residency graduates seeking additional experience in the field of cerebrovascular surgery.

Candidates:
US neurosurgical graduates or residents in training from ACGME accredited institutions. Foreign graduates already licensed in their own country, who are ECFMG certified will be considered.

Program Length:
12 Months

Program Purpose:
Our goal is to provide qualified neurosurgeons with additional experience in the field of cerebrovascular surgery including complex aneurysm surgery and bypass. The program is aimed at post-residency US neurosurgeons who wish to deepen their interest in this specialty.

Description of Teaching/Learning Activities:

  1. Operative experience in cerebrovascular surgery including complex aneurysms, bypass, carotid endarterectomy, and AVMs. Hands on clinical experience under the direct supervision of faculty members
  2. Monthly Neurosurgery Grand Rounds with guest lecturers among the leaders in neurosurgery and neurosurgical research, followed by case presentations from the neurosurgical community in the city
  3. Daily multidisciplinary teaching rounds in the ICU
  4. Bi-monthly M&M conferences with case discussions.
  5. Participation in teaching conferences and symposia dedicated to cerebrovascular topics.
  6. Dedicated time for participation in research projects performed by section of cerebrovascular surgery.
  7. Hands-on cadaver and microsurgery laboratory.

Facilities and Other Resources:
UIC Medical Center and all facilities and resources currently available for the neurosurgery resident will also be available for the neurosurgery fellow.

Post-Residency Fellowship
Stereotactic & Functional

Program Title:
Clinical Fellowship in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery

Sponsoring Department:

Participants:
Post-residency graduates seeking additional experience in the field of stereotactic and functional neurosurgery.

Candidates:
US neurosurgical graduates or residents in training from ACGME accredited institutions and their Canadian equivalents. Foreign graduates Foreign graduates already licensed in their own country, who are ECFMG certified will be considered.

Program Length:
12 Months

Program Purpose:
Our goal is to provide qualified neurosurgeons with additional experience in the field of stereotactic and functional neurosurgery including surgery for movement disorders, surgical treatment of pain, stereotactic radiosurgery and other applications. The program is aimed at post-residency US neurosurgeons who wish to deepen their interest in this specialty.

Description of Teaching/Learning Activities:

  1. Operative experience in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery including surgery for movement disorders, surgical treatment of pain, stereotactic radiosurgery and other applications. Hands on clinical experience under the direct supervision of faculty members
  2. Ongoing participation in clinical care, including inpatient and outpatient components, under supervision of Fellowship Director and other faculty members.
  3. Monthly Neurosurgery Grand Rounds with guest lecturers among the leaders in neurosurgery and neurosurgical research, followed by case presentations from the neurosurgical community in the city.
  4. Bi-monthly M&M conferences with case discussions.
  5. Participation in teaching conferences and symposia dedicated to functional neurosurgery topics.
  6. Dedicated time for participation in research projects performed by section of stereotactic and functional neurosurgery.
  7. Hands-on cadaver laboratory.

Facilities and Other Resources:
UIC Medical Center and all facilities and resources currently available for the neurosurgery residents, as well as Illinois Gamma Knife Center, will also be available for the stereotactic and functional neurosurgery fellow.

(with neurosurgical Emphasis)

Program Title:
Surgical Internship with Neurosurgical Emphasis

Participants:
Medical school graduates seeking additional experience in the field of general surgery and neurosurgery.

Candidates:
US medical school graduates from accredited institutions. Foreign medical school graduates must be ECFMG certified.

Program Length:
12 Months

Program Purpose:
Our goal is to provide medical school graduates who are contemplating pursuing training with one year of experience as a general surgery intern with intensive exposure to neurosurgical management and surgery as a part of the year's curriculum.

Description of Teaching/Learning Activities:

  1. Intensive care and operative experience in neurosurgery. Hands on clinical experience under the direct supervision of faculty members
  2. Monthly Neurosurgery Grand Rounds with guest lecturers among the leaders in neurosurgery and neurosurgical research, followed by case presentations from the neurosurgical community in the city
  3. Daily multidisciplinary teaching rounds in the ICU
  4. Bi-monthly M&M conferences with case discussions.
  5. Hands-on cadaver and microsurgery laboratory.
