Welcome
to the UIC Department of Pathology Division of Chemical Pathology,
Special Chemistry/Critical Care Section
The
Special Chemistry Service provides information to clinicians in
the diagnosis and treatments of Sickle Cell anemia, Thalassemia,
and other hemoglobinopathies, using HPLC analysis. We also report
approximately 10,000 Hemoglobin A1c analyses annually to assess
how well diabetic patients are controlling their blood glucose levels.
Other analyses include serum and urinary protein electrophoresis,
immunofixation electrophoresis. The laboratory offers Sweat Chloride
analysis utilizing FDA approved methodology for the diagnosis of
Cystic Fibrosis.
The
Critical Care Service offers a range of Stat tests to clinicians
for the assessment of respiratory and metabolic functions in critically
ill patients. These tests include Blood Gas analysis (pH, pCO2,
pO2), Blood Oximetry (tHb, O2Hb, MetHb, COHb, sO2m), Whole Blood
chemistries (electrolytes and Glucose), and the newest marker
for congestive heart failure, B-type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP).
Staffed by highly qualified laboratory professionals and equipped
with cutting edge technology, the laboratory provides more than
54,000 test results annually, contributing to the delivery of
excellent patient care.
The
Chemical Pathology Laboratory is located on the University of
Illinois Medical Center Campus at 840 South Wood Street, second
floor. The laboratory is staffed 7 days/week, 365 days/year. Pathology
