Step 1 - Review Your Credentials

To be considered for the Doctor of Philosophy in Neuroscience:

Baccalaureate Field: No restrictions. Prior academic work in the following disciplines is strongly recommended:

Biology 8 hours - introductory biology plus lab
Chemistry 16 hours - general chemistry and organic chemistry plus labs or
Biochemistry 3-4 hours
Physics 6 hours - introductory physics

Grade Point Average: A minimum average of 3.0 (4.0 = A) for the final 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of undergraduate study.

Tests Required (UIC Test Code 1851): GRE general; scores will be evaluated on an individual basis in relation to other markers of academic achievement. However, students with verbal + quantitative scores greater than 1200 have been preferred.

Minimum TOEFL Score (for International Applicants) (UIC Test Code 1851): 620 paper-based; 260 computer-based. For the TOEFL iBT, we will utilize the Graduate College minima (Reading 19, Speaking 20, Listening 17, Writing 21, Total 80).

Personal Statement: A one to three page statement of the applicant’s professional goals, including the justification for pursuing a career in neurosciences, is required - see Step 2.

Letters of Recommendation: Three required, preferably from instructors and advisors who are familiar with the applicant’s recent work - see Step 4.

Applications are accepted for the Fall semester only. Students who submit their application credentials by December 15 will receive preferential consideration. All applications and transcripts must be received by the Office of Admissions and Records no later than February 1 for consideration for the following academic year. We also need to receive your Personal Statement and Letters of Recommendation by this date for you to receive full consideration. Please note that the Neuroscience Office will be closed Dec. 20-26, 2012.
