Program Governance

UIC FlagThe Graduate Program in Neuroscience is a multidisciplinary and extradepartmental organization administered directly by the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The operations of the Program are directed by the Program Coordinator who is appointed from the faculty by the Dean of the Graduate College.

  • The Program Coordinator serves as the liaison between the Graduate College Administration and the Program Executive Committee and is the agent of the Program Faculty for the execution of the Program Educational Policy.
  • The Program Coordinator oversees the day to day operations of the Program and insures the coordination of activities between the Program Committees and participating Departments and Colleges within the University.
  • The Program Coordinator after discussion with the Executive Committee is responsible for the preparation, submission and management of the annual budget provided to the Program by the Graduate College.
  • The Program Coordinator will serve as the Program Director of Graduate Studies.

Three Program Directors (who with the Program Coordinator form the Program Executive Committee) representing the three areas of programmatic specialization are elected by the Program Faculty on a staggered, rotating three year basis.

  • The Program Directors will be responsible for insuring that appropriate resources are available to support the faculty and students in the Program, which includes securing training grant support for the students.
  • The Program Directors will be responsible for the thematic development of their specialization, initiate collaborative efforts and promote collegiality among their colleagues within the several centers of Neuroscience excellence across the Campus.
  • The Program Directors will also work with the Director of Graduate Studies to monitor student recruitment and progress.

The Dean of the Graduate College appoints the Program Coordinator as the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS). The DGS appoints a representative Graduate Studies Committee. The DGS in consultation with the Graduate Studies Committee is responsible for managing recruitment and admissions, monitoring student progress, assessing curricular needs and evaluating curricular effectiveness, sequencing and timing.
