Introduction to Asian American Studies Course
What is the history of Asians in America?
How was Asian American Studies started? Why?
What are the important historic and contemporary issues affecting Asian Americans?
The Introduction to Asian American Studies course covers answers to the questions above and also examines other topics such as: immigration, family, identity, literature, arts, media, gender, activism, anti-Asian violence, education, political participation, work and labor …
Students have an exciting opportunity to integrate personal experience with research from many academic fields, such as: education, psychology, sociology, anthropology, urban planning, literature, and history.
Intro to ASAM meets the former Cultural Diversity and Humanities Gen Ed requirements. And it meets the new Gen Ed themes: Individual and Society or Understanding U.S. Society.
The course is offered through a partnership between the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) and AARCC. It was first taught in Spring 2006.
This course will be offered again in Spring 2009. Register under ASAM 125, ENGL 125 or SOC 125. Email Professor Karen Su for more information: <karensu@uic.edu>.
