If you attended UIC,
you probably remember how hard it was to find a quiet place to
work on a paper, or just relax for a few minutes between classes.
Until recently, little had been done to relieve the concrete walls
and dim lighting that dominate many UIC buildings.
Now, Project Oasis has
transformed more than a dozen grim spaces into cozy places to
relax, read, or just hang out with friends. These "oases" offer
comfortable sofas and chairs, study tables, good light for reading,
carpetting, plants, and artwork by UIC Art and Design students.

You
will find the Oases dotted around East Campus: four in BSB, one
in Stevenson Hall (designed by UIC architecture and industrial
design students), one each in Taft, Lincoln, and Burnham Halls,
three alcoves in SES East, and two on the fourth floor of Science
and Engineering Labs East. And, in University Hall, the crown
jewel of the Oasis program, the Rebecca Port Faculty Student
Center and Cafe.
Soon
the Daley library will house another Oasis and, on West Campus, you
can relax and put your feet up in the Oasis at 1919 West Taylor St.
in the College of Applied Health Sciences. This Oasis also has garden
area for use in warm weather. Read
some comments on Project Oasis from students.
