The Council for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), composed of faculty members who have been recognized for their demonstrated teaching excellence, provides a mechanism by which faculty, staff, and administrators can work collaboratively toward the improvement of instruction and the advancement of learning in UIC's culturally pluralistic community. Through the development of programs, policies, resources and rewards, CETL strives to encourage every member of the academic community to develop interests, abilities, and achievements as both teachers and learners.
CETL offers various programs and resources to support excellent teaching and learning throughout the UIC community including:
-
Curriculum and Instructional Grants (CIG)--a seed fund to support faculty initiatives designed to enhance the quality of teaching and learning
-
Teaching Recognition Program (TRP)--a program to recognize and reward documented excellence of UIC faculty in instruction
-
Departmental Teaching Excellence Award (DETA)--this programs recognizes the commitment to teaching and documented instructional excellence of departments and other academic units
-
Resources--publications, reports, links, and other instructional resources for faculty, staff, and administrators (under construction)
-

Teaching evaluations can provide useful feedback to improve your instructional capabilities, and can affect your academic career in many ways. What are the mechanisms and considerations by which teaching is evaluated? What can you do to garner higher teaching evaluations? Are current mechanisms of instructional assessment at UIC adequate? What changes might be made to improve the assessment process?
Please join Michael Michela of the UIC Teaching and Learning Center and Andrew Cooper from the Center for the Advancement of Distance Education for an interactive discussion of these issues. Topics will include assessment vs. evaluation, formative vs. summative evaluation, classroom assessment exercises, the current SIT evaluation tool, and the strengths and weaknesses of online course evaluation mechanisms.
This workshop is open to all faculty and graduate students concerned about effective teaching methods, and qualifies as an accredited seminar for individuals in the College Teaching Preparation Program.
No RSVPs are necessary. Questions about the program should be directed to Robert Paul Malchow, Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, at paulmalc@uic.edu.
