General education involves coursework in three broad areas: the natural sciences (sometimes subdivided into life sciences and physical sciences, but also including mathematics), the social sciences (sometimes subdivided into social and behavioral sciences) and the humanities. The method of investigation varies greatly among these three, but increasingly their concerns have tended to merge and overlap.
