Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost Message 7/3/12
Message from the Provost – Faculty Unionization Efforts
Last week the University was notified that the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board (IELRB) has certified two bargaining units for UIC faculty (excluding the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy) with appointments of .51 percent or greater: one for tenure-system faculty and the other for contingent faculty.
We have received an e-mail from the union calling upon us to begin collective bargaining with the two units, and we will do so. As noted in our many previous communications to the faculty on this subject, the University negotiates fairly and in good faith with any properly certified bargaining unit. We have a history of good relations with the 19 employee bargaining units that were in place prior to last week, and the same spirit will characterize our dealings with the newly formed faculty bargaining units as we negotiate pay, hours and conditions of employment.
I want to thank all of you for everything you do on behalf of our students and all others whom we serve, and I wish you a restful and enjoyable summer.
Lon S. Kaufman
