The University of Illinois at Chicago invites registered Illinois high school students to participate in the 7th annual poetry contest.

AWARDS AND PRIZES

On Sunday, May 15, thirty winners will be honored at the UIC Poetry Contest Awards and Readings Ceremony.

NEW FOR 2005

The Honors College & the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will jointly offer the first prize winner a 4 year tuition+ fees - free scholarship, if accepted into UIC Honors College .

First Place Winner $200

Second Place Winner $100

Third Place Winner $50

4-Fourth Place Winners $25

Honorable Mention Winners will each receive autographed copies of "The Air Lost in Breathing," by Simone Muench, and an autographed issue of the literary journal RHINO, featuring Mary Biddinger's poem "Palomino."

 

 

 

ALL winners will receive a copy of “Blues Narratives,” by Professor Emeritus Sterling Plumpp, recipient of the Carl Sandburg Literary Award for Poetry.

The UIC Poetry Contest is supported by the Office of the Provost, The Honors College, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, University of Illinois at Chicago.

Cardinal Room,  3rd Floor

Time: Check-In: 12:30 p.m.
Ceremony Begins: 1:00 p.m.
Program Ends: 3:00 p.m
Free Parking: Halsted Street Parking Structure
801 South Halsted Street

Entrance to the structure is on Taylor Street. Take a ticket to enter the structure and bring it with you for validation at the registration table.

RULES

  • Deadline—Entries must be postmarked by March 14
  • Only one poem permitted per student
  • Contestant must be a registered Illinois high school student
  • Poem must be 25 lines or fewer and submitted on Poetry Contest Entry Form
  • Download entry form in pdf format (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader) or in Word format. This form may be photocopied.)
  • No E-mail or fax submissions will be accepted
  • Only winners will be notified by mail
  • The judges regret that they cannot return or comment on poems
