THE CHANCE PROGRAM - COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

The Office of School Relations and the CHANCE Learning Center (CLC) in collaboration with both on and off campus partners provides access for its students to the following: Academic Skills Builders courses, tutoring services (face-to-face and web-based), peer-to-peer mentors, specialized seminars and workshops. We also offer access to professionals who provide programs tailored to improve and enhance students’ academic and professional profiles, technology training and assistance, and cultural enrichment opportunities.

Our students who come to us from “all walks of life” represent the “best and the brightest” within their perspective communities. The 2005-06 ethnic /racial composition of our population served included; 78% African American, 17% Hispanic/Latino, 1% White and 4.5% Other. Recognizing that many of our clients come from households that are first-generation college students, the CHANCE Learning Center offers access to; tuition scholarship opportunities, campus housing opportunities, book vouchers, study abroad scholarship opportunities, and a “state-of-the-art” laptop.

Since the inception of the program PC has awarded $110,500 in scholarships to students in need of financial assistance. Also during this academic year PC awarded over $35,000 in book vouchers to help students defray some of their college expenses.

During the FY05-06 school year PC provided on-campus “mini-grants” for campus partners to assist with our mission to provide tutoring, mentoring, academic counseling, confidence building, diversity training, leadership skills, distance learning opportunities, career counseling and much more.
