July 18, 2013

I am delighted to announce that Steve Everett has accepted the position of Dean of the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts, effective August 1, 2013, pending approval by the Board of Trustees. Dr. Everett comes to UIC from Emory University where he serves as professor of music and assistant provost for academic affairs.

Dr. Everett is a composer and conductor whose research and teaching interests include electronic music, cross-cultural influences in music, and the philosophy of technology in art. He directs Emory's Music/Audio Research Center, which includes laboratories for experimentation in composition, audiovisual design, interactive performance, and new media. As assistant provost, Dr. Everett directs Emory's Center for Faculty Development and Excellence, which presents teaching and learning workshops, supports research, and fosters interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty. He has also served as chair of the music department and president of Emory's faculty senate.

Before joining Emory in 1991, Dr. Everett taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Kennesaw State University in Georgia, and Ohio Northern University. He has taught as a visiting professor of composition at Princeton University and a guest composer at the Eastman School of Music, Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique in Paris, Conservatoire de Musique Geneve in Switzerland, Rotterdam Conservatory of Music, and Utrecht School of the Arts. Dr. Everett holds a doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and he earned his master's and bachelor's degrees from Florida State University.

UIC's College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts is unique and respected worldwide, and I am confident that Steve Everett will lead the college to even greater prominence. My thanks go to the search committee, chaired by Bruce Graham, Dean of the College of Dentistry, for their excellent work. I would also like to thank Robert Somol, Director of the School of Architecture, for serving as Interim Dean this past year.
