Provost Announcement: Dr. Alfred Tatum Appointed Interim Dean of the UIC College of Education
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Alfred W. Tatum has agreed to serve as Interim Dean of the UIC College of Education, effective August 16, 2013, pending Board of Trustees approval. Dr. Tatum is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Curriculum & Instruction. This appointment will follow the retirement of Dr. Victoria Chou, who has served for 16 distinguished years as dean of the college. A search for a permanent dean began last year and will continue this fall.
Dr. Tatum is a foremost expert on the literacy development of African American boys. He has authored more than 50 publications on the topic, including three books, and he recently authored policy reports and solution briefs for Jobs for the Future and the Council of Great City Schools. He is also the author on four major reading and writing programs used with millions of students throughout the country. For more than 10 years, he has served on the national reading committee for the National Assessment of Educational Progress. He also served on the Board of Directors of the two major literacy organizations, the International Reading Association and the Literacy Research Association.
Dr. Tatum has been invited to guest-lecture at many top universities and was invited to participate in the National Summit on Educational Excellence and Opportunity for African American Males held last August in Washington by the U.S. Department of Education. The summit was part of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans, which aims to ensure that all African-American students receive an education that fully prepares them for high school graduation, college completion, and productive careers.
At UIC, Dr. Tatum has previously served as director of the UIC Reading Clinic and coordinator of the Literacy, Language, and Culture Ph.D. program. Prior to arriving at UIC in 2007, he served on the faculties of Buffalo State College, the University of Maryland, and Northern Illinois University, and he was a senior research associate for North Central Regional Education Lab.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Tatum to the dean's office.
