Position Description – Dean of the Graduate College (Internal Search)

The Dean of the Graduate College is the chief academic and administrative officer responsible for overseeing graduate studies, continuing studies, and international education at UIC.  The Dean reports to the Provost and serves as a member of the Deans’ Council and the Provost’s Management Team. The Dean oversees the College’s operating and fellowship budget as well as the budgets of other reporting units, including the Office of International Affairs, School of Continuing Studies and US-Asia Executive Development Program, and is responsible for identifying new sources of revenue and of private and federal funding for these areas. 

Responsibilities include: 

Graduate College
Serves as academic and fiscal leader of the Graduate College in all areas, including curriculum, budget, staff development, student activities, and the graduate academic experience.  Develops strategies for attracting and retaining students and creates curricular enhancements.  Works to ensure the diversity of the graduate student body, oversees Graduate College fellowship and research awards and provides campus leadership on issues related to graduate assistantships.  Advises the Provost in campus Promotion and Tenure review.

Academic Programs and Curriculum
Works closely with the other deans and the Provost to develop graduate academic programs designed to maintain excellence, sustain and enhance student diversity, and increase the retention and graduation of graduate students.  Provides leadership in the development of interdisciplinary study and works cooperatively with the Vice Provost for Planning and Programs on the periodic review of academic programs.

Teaching and Learning
Works with the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs to improve teaching and learning for graduates and to support the professional development of teaching assistants.  Works with the Vice Provost for Planning and Programs to assess learning outcomes for graduates.

Office of International Affairs
Oversees the budget and operations of the Office of International Affairs, including international partnerships for joint academic programs, faculty and student exchanges, and relationships with international constituents.

School of Continuing Studies
Oversees the growth of the School of Continuing Studies to reach additional audiences for UIC programs at all levels, works cooperatively with the other deans on development of programs appropriate for continuing studies audiences and provides campus leadership for academic policies related to continuing studies.

US-Asia Executive Development Program
Oversees the budget and operations of the US-Asia Executive Development Program, including new program development and engagement with international constituents.
