Nominations and applications are invited for the position of Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).

UIC (www.uic.edu) is one of the nation’s preeminent urban public research universities, a Carnegie RU/VH research institution, and the largest university in Chicago.  UIC serves approximately 28,000 students, comprising one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation.  Through its 15 colleges, including a full complement of health sciences, UIC actively fosters multidisciplinary academic programs in partnership with local, national, and international organizations.  By emphasizing research along with a commitment to the success of students, UIC sets a high standard for the dynamic, vibrant, and engaged 21st-century urban university.

With current grant expenditures totaling over $27 million annually, the UIC College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (www.uic.edu/las/) has attained a substantial increase in its research profile, reflecting the distinction of its faculty and programs.  LAS, with more than 350 faculty and 200 staff, offers over 40 fields of specialization at undergraduate and graduate levels.  Its 25 departments and programs include a full range of ethnic and gender studies as well as the core humanities, social sciences, and scientific disciplines, playing a central role in providing the general education curriculum for all of UIC’s 16,800 undergraduate students.  LAS graduates approximately 95 doctoral candidates each year.

LAS vigorously supports interdisciplinary research and teaching efforts with other UIC colleges and with other Chicago-area institutions.  Many LAS students are also members of the UIC Honors College, which attracts approximately 1500 exceptional undergraduates.  Undergraduate students are offered research opportunities across the disciplines with the support of the LAS Undergraduate Research Initiative.  In addition, a guaranteed admissions program to UIC’s health sciences colleges and schools draw many of the state’s most gifted undergraduate students to LAS.

Candidates for the position of Dean of LAS must have the following qualifications: an outstanding record of scholarly and educational achievement, meriting appointment as a tenured full professor in one of the departments or programs of the College; a history of successful administrative experience; a demonstrated commitment to diversity, student learning, and shared faculty governance; and experience with and a commitment to fundraising.  Equally important is the ability to deploy resources strategically and manage a complex organization while articulating a vision for the future of liberal arts and sciences within a public urban research university.
