Provost Announcement: Saul J. Weiner Appointed UIC Vice Provost for Planning and Programs
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Saul J. Weiner as Vice Provost for Planning and Programs effective January 7, 2013, pending approval by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees. My thanks go to Professor Barbara Ransby for a year of excellent service as Interim Vice Provost, and to the search committee, chaired by Frank Goldberg, Vice Provost for Resource Planning and Management.
Dr. Weiner is a graduate of Harvard College, Dartmouth Medical School, and the University of Chicago with board certification in internal medicine and pediatrics. He is Professor of Medicine, Pediatrics and Medical Education in the College of Medicine. Since 1997 he has served variously as Program Director of the Combined Residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Division Head of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Vice-Head of Department of Pediatrics and, currently, as Senior Associate Dean for Educational Affairs in the College of Medicine. As Senior Associate Dean Dr. Weiner led a major curricular reform, aligning the four regional campuses’ educational program, introducing learner centered educational methods, a customized learning management system and computer based testing. At the campus level he serves as chair of the Education Committee of the IT Governance Council.
Dr. Weiner’s research, in both health policy and medical decision making, has been continuously funded since 2001. His publications include studies of how large health care organizations manage uninsured patients and on the performance of clinicians at addressing contextual factors in patients’ lives when planning their care.
Dr. Weiner’s breadth of leadership experience at UIC, his multidisciplinary research involving partnerships across campus, and his track record of facilitating organizational change through partnerships and shared governance make him an ideal choice for this position. Please join me in welcoming him to his new role.
