GPPA Medicine Year 1
Medicine as a Profession – First Eight Weeks of Spring Semester of First Year
Changes in health care delivery systems are challenging the professional behavior of physicians. The goal of this class is to examine medicine as a profession and explore the value of professionalism to pre-medicine students. We raise the concept of professionalism in the consciousness of participants and equip them with the knowledge and skills that they need to understand the roles and responsibilities of a medical professional in our contemporary society. This course is organized in a discussion group format utilizing scenarios and case studies to enhance student participation. Students will read books and journal articles on the issues and challenges of professionalism.
- Learn the ethical and societal expectations and demands for physicians
- Understand the definition of professionalism in medicine
- Define professional standards of conduct for physicians
- Discuss social issues and challenges that medical professionals face in contemporary society.
History & Philosophy – Second Eight Weeks of Spring Semester of First Year
- Discuss the different ways in which people and the scientific movements of which they were a part, thought about disease and constructed strategies to combat it (and its newest manifestations) throughout time.
- Describe and give examples of the interaction of medicine and society; medicine’s impact upon socio-cultural institutions and politics, as well as philosophical and intellectual currents and their varying influence upon the development of medical knowledge and practice
- Read, discuss and write critically about recurring themes in history and medicine.
This seminar examines historical developments that have contributed to the present state of the medical profession, medical institutions and medical knowledge. Students are exposed to the central issues that have consistently been debated, such as medical theory and practice from Antiquity to the late Modern period. Examples of these issues include theories of disease causations, the interaction of religion and medicine, the nature of health institutions, professional behavior and authority, the influence of other fields upon medicine, etc. The course provides an overview of historical events specific to clinical medicine and public health emphasizing common themes in their various manifestations according to time and place.
GPPA Medicine Year 2
Medicine, Health Policy and Society – First Eight Weeks of Fall Semester of Second Year
This course concentrates on public policy, and political aspects of medicine and health care. The societal context in which the practice of medicine takes place is of primary consideration. Students review how public policy around health issues is developed, implemented and evaluated. The interrelationships between local, state and national policies are examined. Areas that have had widespread implications for medical care in the US and abroad are explored. Students are expected to apply concepts that they learned in previous seminars to the examination of these issues.

- Learn how laws and the regulation of policy and procedures directly impact the delivery of healthcare
- Develop an appreciation of the physician’s role in trying to influence the healthcare system
The Art and Science of Medicine - Second Eight Weeks of Fall Semester of Second Year
Dr. William Osler said “The practice of medicine is an art, based on science.” This course explores the interplay of scientific foundations of medicine, the skills of the physician-patient interaction, and the necessary use of emerging medical technologies. It does so through close examination of readings on a wide variety of perspectives offering a broad range for debate on the topic.
- Understand the interdependence of medical “art” and “science” in medical practice
- Learn about the interdependence of medical art and science in the development of medical innovation
- Appreciate the interdependence of art and science in medical education
- Recognize the influence of personal and cultural beliefs in the practice of medicine
- Develop the ability to engage in the dialectical reasoning in discussions with others and of one’s own reading.
