Oral English Proficiency Program
How the Certifications Process Works:
A graduate student admitted based on an ibT (internet-based TOEFL) score. . .
with an ibT Speaking score of 26 or above and a Listening score of 24 or above, |
is automatically certified for immediate teaching assignment upon submitting a copy of their subscores in person to the ITA Program before the end of the first week of classes. |
with an ibT Speaking score of 24, 25, or 26 and a Listening score of 22 or 23 |
must schedule a Performance Evaluation (PE) with the ITA Program to be done before the end of the first week of classes. If the student received a PE score of 50, 55, or 60, the student is fully certified for immediate teaching assignment. |
with an ibT Speaking score of 23, 22, or 21 and a Listening score of greater than 17 |
must register for ESL 401 to be done concurrent with an initial teaching assignment. |
| with ibT Speaking and Listening scores lower than the admission requirements (Speaking 20 & Listening 17) | must register for ESL 401 and can only be offered a TA assignment with minimal student contact, such as tutoring, office hours, or grading. They must meet the minimum PE score of 50 before being a given teaching assignment with full instructional responsibilities

A graduate student admitted based on an IELTS (Internat’l Eng. Lang. Systems) score. . . |

with an IELTS Speaking score of 8.0 or above and a Listening score of 7.5 or above |
is automatically certified for immediate teaching assignment upon submitting a copy of their subscores in person to the ITA Program before the end of the first week of classes |
| with an IELTS Speaking score of 7.0, 7.5 or 8.0 and an IELTS Listening score of 6.5 or 6.0 | must schedule a Performance Evaluation (PE) with the ITA Program to be done before the end of the first week of classes. If the student received a PE score of 50, 55, or 60, the student is fully certified for immediate teaching assignment. |
| With a IELTS Speaking score of 6.0 or 6.5 | must register for ESL 401 to be done concurrent with an initial teaching assignment |
| with IELTS Speaking and Listening scores lower than the admission requirements (Speaking 6.0 & Listening 6.0) | must register for ESL 401 and can only be offered a TA assignment with minimal student contact, such as tutoring, office hours, or grading. They must meet the minimum PE score of 50 before being a given teaching assignment with full instructional responsibilities |
A graduate student from another U.S. higher ed institution or a UIC graduate. . .
for whom the ibT or IELTS admission requirement has been waived |
Must schedule an appointment with the ITA Program before the end of the first week of classes to determine whether a Performance Evaulation or ESL 401 coursework is required. |
A student who does a Performance Evaluation (PE)*. . .
and receives a passing score of 50, 55, or 60 |
is automatically fully certified for teaching and has met the Oral Certification requirement |
and receives a conditional score of 45 |
must register for ESL 401 to be done concurrent with an initial teaching assignment |
After completion of one semester of ESL 401. . .
All students |
will be evaluated by a Performance Evaluation and the their oral certification status will be adjusted if appropriate. |
Students receiving passing scores of 50, 55, or 60 |
are fully certified for a teaching assignment. |
Students unable to reach this exit criteria by the end of one semester of ESL 401 |
are required to a take an additional semester of ESL 401 is the appointing unit intends to appoint this students as a TA in the future |
