JW Saxe Prize for Public Service

Important Notes: The JW Saxe Prize does not require an actual
application form. Please see application instructions below
and on the website for more details.
Eligibility: Must be an
undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college
or university;
be seeking support
for an internship in public service, or a project related to
public service. Preference is given to students who already
have a place in an existing program or who have created their
own program and with demonstrated public service activity --
past, present and/or future; and financial need will be taken
into consideration
Description: The J.W. Saxe Memorial Fund provides scholarships
up to $2,000 annually to one or more undergraduate or graduate
students working in public service. The award is meant to enable
the student to gain practical experience in public service
by taking a no-pay or low-pay job during a summer or other
term.
Application Instructions: A complete application includes
the following: a resume, a statement of short- and long-term
goals, three letters of recommendation (with at least one coming
from a faculty member). Winners are notified by May 1. OSSP
will assist students with the compilation and submission of
J.W. Saxe Prize applications.

McKelvie Scholarship for Public Service

Important Notes:
Eligibility: Applicants must demonstrate superior scholarship,
and evidence of commitment to a career in government, and past,
current and/or anticipated future participation in government.
For example, past or current participation might include an
internship with a public agency. Scholarships are open to undergraduate
and graduate students pursuing careers in public service.
Description: The McKelvie Scholarship, offered
by the Political Science department of the University of
Nebraska, is open to
undergraduates and graduates from all U.S. institutions. Twenty
scholarships ranging up to $2,000 are awarded each year. The
purpose is to promote and strengthen public service leadership
in the public sector. "Public service" in this context
refers to work and/or a career in government employment. These
include but are not confined to local, state, and federal government,
employment or careers. In addition to the application form,
applicants must submit transcripts of all academic work, a
résumé, and two letters of support.

Freeman-ASIA Scholarship for Study Abroad

Deadline: April 2, 2008 for fall semester or regular-start
year-long programs (August-November)
Important Notes: This award is only applicable to fifteen
(15) East and Southeast Asian countries. Please consult website
for list of eligible countries.
Eligibility: US citizens and permanent residents only. Applicants
must be enrolled as an undergraduate at a US college or university,
and receive financial aid or have verifiable financial need.
Only students interested in studying in Asia may apply.
Description: Seeks to encourage study abroad by American students
in Asian countries. Students who participate must commit to
promoting study abroad in Asia on their home campus upon completion
of the program. Priority is given to students with no previous
experience in the country where they plan to study. Provides
$3,000 - $7,000 to study in one of 15 Asian countries.

UIC Everett and Florence Drumright Scholarship

Important Notes:
Eligibility: Candidates must be UIC undergraduate students
who are American and are born of Chinese descent. Applicants
must have completed at least one year of course work by May
31, 2008, and have at least a 3.0 / 4.0 GPA for ALL post-high
school coursework.
Description: The Everett & Florence Drumright
Scholarship awards $1,000 to successful UIC student applicants.
The awarding
of the scholarships will be determined based on a combination
of academic merit and the personal statements. Students in
all fields are eligible.

Worldstudio Foundation Scholarship for Art and Design

Important Notes: Please see website for a complete list of
eligible art and design disciplines. Previous winners of this
award can re-apply to be considered in future years.
Eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident;
be an undergraduate or graduate student in one of (20) art
and design disciplines; be accepted or matriculated in an accredited
college or university for the full academic year (two semesters),
and be enrolled full-time during that year; have a GPA of at
least 2.0/4.0 scale; and demonstrate verifiable financial need.
Preference for applicants who are of minority status.
Description: Worldstudio Foundation in conjunction
with AIGA, the professional association for design, provide
scholarships
to minority and economically disadvantaged students who are
studying design and arts disciplines in colleges and universities
in the United States. Among the scholarships’ primary
aims are to increase diversity in the creative professions
and to foster social and environmental responsibility in the
artists, designers and studios of tomorrow. To this end, scholarship
recipients are selected not only for their ability and need,
but also for their demonstrated commitment to positive change
in the larger community through their work.
Basic scholarships are awarded in the amounts
of $2,000–$3,000.
One or two top awards may be given in an amount up to $5,000
at the jury’s discretion. Each award is paid directly
to the recipient’s school and applied toward tuition.
In addition, honorable mention prizes in the amount of $200
cash are also awarded.

UIC Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship

Eligibility: Continuing UIC African-American, Latino(a) or
Native-American undergraduate students who have a current cumulative
GPA of 3.0/4.0 and will be a junior or a senior status if the
fall after applying or African-American, Latino(a) or Native-American
graduate or professional students who have demonstrated high
academic achievement. All students must have completed at least
one semester at UIC, and must plan to be enrolled full-time
during the coming academic year. Present or past holders of
the graduate or professional awards are not eligible. Past
winners of the undergraduate award are eligible. Full or part-time
UIC employees are not eligible (this does not include student
workers or graduate assistants). Applicants must be citizens
or eligible non-citizens.
Description: The Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Program
was established in 1985 at UIC to encourage African-American,
Latino(a), and Native-American UIC students who have demonstrated
high academic achievement in the many fields where they have
traditionally been underrepresented and who have shown commitment
through community and campus service. 15 $2,000 undergraduate
scholarships, five $5,000 graduate fellowships and five $5,000
professional fellowships are awarded annually. Selection is
based on academic record, personal statement, recommendations,
and demonstrated commitment to community/campus service.
