UIC Students Needed for Audience for Wheel of Fortune

Deadline: January 29, 2008

Description: Student audience participation for the Wheel of Fortune Game Show is needed. The show is looking for UIC students that are interested in being in the audience. Audience members can wear their UIC school logo apparel. Any student who is interested in participating should email bwilli13@uic.edu by January 29. The date of the show is Saturday, March 8, 2008; there is a 3pm taping and a 7pm taping.

UIC Career Services’ Internship & Part-time Job Fair

Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Program

Important Notes: Interested applicants should contact the Office of Special Scholarship Programs for more information on becoming a UIC nominee. UIC may nominate only two candidates per year.

Eligibility: Students must be college seniors or recent college graduates at the time of nomination. All applicants should have a high level of academic achievement as demonstrated by superior grades, academically rigorous courses, and participation in challenging extracurricular activities, especially those demonstrating leadership potential and/or an appreciation for the arts and humanities. Financial need is also considered for this award. For more specific information, or to obtain an application, please consult the Cooke website.

Description: The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship Program awards 45-50 scholarships of up to $50,000 to college seniors or recent graduates applying in the spring to attend graduate programs the following fall. The scholarship awards will provide funding for tuition, room and board, books, and other required fees for the length of the graduate degree program, up to six years. All applicants must be nominated by their university.

DAAD Summer Internship Program in Berlin for American Journalism Students

Important Notes: The 40 applicants who are invited to a selection interview in New York City (around early March) will receive up to $ 300 toward the cost of their flight to the interview location.

Eligibility: Scholarships will be awarded to 20 students enrolled in a school of journalism or majoring in a journalism-related field and have at least "advanced intermediate" German language skills to take part in this structured 11-week study/internship program in Germany.

Description: For the first six weeks, participants will expand their academic understanding of the politics, society and culture of Germany, and the country's current social conditions and media scene. Participants will then do a week of project work with journalism students from the Independent States of the former Soviet Union and subsequently embark on an intensive four-week internship with a German newspaper, magazine or radio station. A complete program schedule is available on the program website given below.

The 20 applicants who are finally selected for the program will be awarded a monthly stipend of 650 Euros for the duration of their stay in Germany. DAAD will also provide participants a partial travel subsidy of approximately 350 Euros towards the cost of international transportation to Germany; travel costs not covered by the partial subsidy must be paid by the individual program participants themselves. DAAD will also provide health and accident insurance.

American Institute of Architects/American Architectural Foundation
RTKL Traveling Fellowship

Application Deadline: February 15, 2008

Important Notes: Students undertaking independent travel must be accepted in a graduate-degree program.

Eligibility: Must be in second-to-last year of a BArch or MArch program when applying and complete travel before graduation. Must have decided to do an independent study abroad experience or a study abroad program through the student’s university, and write a proposal reflecting personal study objectives (if participating in an established study abroad program).

Description: The RTKL Traveling Fellowship was established by the architecture firm RTKL Associates, Inc., in honor of one of its founders, Francis T. Taliaferro, FAIA. The fellowship is intended to support foreign travel undertaken to further educational goals.

The winner of the fellowship receives $2,500 to apply towards their foreign travel. The award announcement is made in April, and the money is given out prior to confirmed travel arrangements.

Morris K. Udall Scholarship

National Udall deadline: March 5, 2008

Important Notes: Students must be nominated for the Udall scholarship by their college's Udall faculty representative; direct applications are not accepted. Contact the Office of Special Scholarship Programs for more information on applying. Universities may nominate up to 6 candidates.

Eligibility: Applicants must be sophomores or juniors in the academic year in which they are applying and be studying the environment or related fields. Native American and Alaskan Native students may also be studying health care or tribal public policy. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0/4.0 or higher and be a U.S. citizen.

Description: Each year, the Foundation awards undergraduate scholarships of up to $5,000 to sophomores and juniors in fields related to the environment, and to Native American and Alaska Natives in fields related to health care or tribal policy. Scholars selected during their sophomore year may be re-nominated during the next year's competition. Over 50 awards are given annually; this year the foundation expects to award 80 nationally.

Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Summer Internship Program

Eligibility: Open to both educators and college students (undergraduate and graduate) in the area of life sciences, physical sciences, or engineering who are interested in ocean science and technology.

Description: Ten (10) internships are offered every summer to educators, undergraduate and graduate students to conduct research in ocean science and technology at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Focus is on the interns’ professional development, learning research techniques, and improving communication and collaboration skills. Internship supports 10 weeks of research at the aquarium’s research institute. For a list of this summer’s projects, visit the website listed above.

There is a weekly stipend of $500 for the 10-week program (June 16 – August 22, 2008). Support may be provided for travel to California. Summer interns will be offered assistance in locating housing. If you are accepted into the program, more details will be forwarded to you.

Rooms in the Monterey and Santa Cruz areas cost approximately $500-$650/month; food costs approximately $200/month. The Monterey area is a popular spot during the summer, so interns are encouraged to arrange accommodations as early as possible. MBARI may be able to arrange carpool transportation to and from MBARI facilities in Moss Landing, CA.
