Important Notes:
Eligibility: Applicants must demonstrate superior scholarship,
and evidence of commitment to a career in government, and past,
current and/or anticipated future participation in government.
For example, past or current participation might include an
internship with a public agency. Scholarships are open to undergraduate
and graduate students pursuing careers in public service.
Description: The McKelvie Scholarship,
offered by the Political Science department of the University
of Nebraska, is open to
undergraduates and graduates from all U.S. institutions. Twenty
scholarships ranging up to $2,000 are awarded each year. The
purpose is to promote and strengthen public service leadership
in the public sector. "Public service" in this context
refers to work and/or a career in government employment. These
include but are not confined to local, state, and federal government,
employment or careers. In addition to the application form,
applicants must submit transcripts of all academic work, a
résumé, and two letters of support.

Freeman-ASIA Study Abroad Scholarship

Deadline: April 2, 2008 for fall semester or regular start
year-long programs (August-November)
Important Notes: This award is only applicable to fifteen
(15) East and Southeast Asian countries. Please consult website
for list of eligible countries.
Eligibility: US citizens and permanent residents only. Applicants
must be enrolled as an undergraduate at a US college or university,
and receive financial aid or have verifiable financial need.
Only students interested in studying in Asia may apply.
Description: Seeks to encourage study abroad by American students
in Asian countries. Students who participate must commit to
promoting study abroad in Asia on their home campus upon completion
of the program. Priority is given to students with no previous
experience in the country where they plan to study. Provides
up to $5,000-$7,000 to study in one of 15 Asian countries for
a semester or academic year starting Fall 2008.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

Deadline: April 15, 2008 for fall semester or regular start
year-long programs (August-November)
Important notes: This award has different deadline for different
study abroad periods.
Eligibility: The applicant must
be a US citizen and an undergraduate in good academic standing
who is receiving a Federal Pell Grant.
The applicant must also be applying to or has been accepted
into a study abroad program eligible for credit at the student’s
accredited institution of higher education in the US. The program
must be at least four weeks in length in one country.
Description: The Benjamin A. Gilman
International Scholarship Program aims to broaden the student
population that studies
abroad by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not
participate due to financial constraints. The scholarship can
be used to study abroad in any country except Cuba or a country
on the State Department’s current travel warning list.
Summer programs are not eligible. The program strongly encourages
students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations,
especially those outside Western Europe and Australia. The
award provides up to $5,000 in funding for students participating
in a study abroad program up to one year in length starting
Fall 2008.

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) Scholarship
Program

Fellowships
Eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident;
have proof of acceptance into an accredited community college,
four-year university, or a professional or graduate program;
must be enrolled as full-time students; have demonstrated financial
need; and a history of consistent and active participation
in public service activities
Description: The CHCI Scholarship Awards are afforded to Latino
students who have demonstrated a strong commitment toward exercising
leadership in their community and who plan to continue contributing
in the future. The ideal candidate balances academics with
community involvement. Applications are available in late September,
and scholarship award winners are announced in late June of
the following year.

UIC Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship

Eligibility: Continuing UIC African-American, Latino(a) or
Native-American undergraduate students who have a current cumulative
GPA of 3.0/4.0 and will be a junior or a senior status if the
fall after applying or African-American, Latino(a) or Native-American
graduate or professional students who have demonstrated high
academic achievement. All students must have completed at least
one semester at UIC, and must plan to be enrolled full-time
during the coming academic year. Present or past holders of
the graduate or professional awards are not eligible. Past
winners of the undergraduate award are eligible. Full or part-time
UIC employees are not eligible (this does not include student
workers or graduate assistants). Applicants must be citizens
or eligible non-citizens.
Description: The Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Program
was established in 1985 at UIC to encourage African-American,
Latino(a), and Native-American UIC students who have demonstrated
high academic achievement in the many fields where they have
traditionally been underrepresented and who have shown commitment
through community and campus service. 15 $2,000 undergraduate
scholarships, five $5,000 graduate fellowships and five $5,000
professional fellowships are awarded annually. Selection is
based on academic record, personal statement, recommendations,
and demonstrated commitment to community/campus service.

Spanish Association of the Midwest Study Abroad Scholarship

Important Notes: The Spanish Association of the Midwest normally
does not support studying in summer programs
Deadline: April 26, 2008
Eligibility: Must be a student currently enrolled in an accredited
Midwestern college or university, have good academic standing,
and can demonstrate superior achievement in Spanish studies.
Eligibility is limited to applicants from academic institutions
in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin.
Description: The Spanish Association of the Midwest offers
scholarships of up to $2,000 each to outstanding students who
will study Spanish language, literature, linguistics, history,
or other disciplines in the humanities at an accredited university
in Spain during the coming academic year. This includes academic
semester (fall or spring) or academic year study ONLY.
