Study Abroad Scholarships

Unless otherwise noted, the Office of Special Scholarship Programs at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) does not administer or sponsor the programs listed on its website. The content of these pages are merely a guide for current undergraduate and professional school students at UIC. The following scholarships have two deadlines: one preliminary, in the spring (April) of student's junior year; and one final, in the fall (August) of student's senior year:

Gates-Cambridge Scholarship - one of the most prestigious scholarships in the U.S. for students who have completed a bachelor's degree, study at the University of Cambridge in England in your field of interest for up to four years

Marshall Scholarship - (UIC STUDENTS APPLY THROUGH OSSP ONLY) one of the most prestigious scholarships in the U.S., sends students with a bachelor's degree to a British university to study for a minimum of two years

Mitchell Scholarship - (UIC STUDENTS APPLY THROUGH OSSP ONLY) one of the most prestigious scholarships in the U.S. for students who have completed a bachelor's degree, funding for one year of study at a university in Ireland

Rhodes Scholarship - (UIC STUDENTS APPLY THROUGH OSSP ONLY) one of the most prestigious scholarships in the U.S., for students with a bachelor's degree to pursue at least two years of study at the University of Oxford in England

Deadline varies or is not available:

Alumni and Friends of The London School of Economics - covers one year of graduate study (full tuition and fees) at the London School of Economics (LSE) for an American citizen

AustraLearn Scholarship Program - scholarships for attending a semester or year-long program via AustraLearn in Australia, New Zealand or Oceania

British Council - listing of study abroad scholarship opportunities for the United Kingdom; both undergraduate and graduate funding opportunities

Center for Global Education at Augsburg College - different scholarships available to students who study abroad on their programs to Mexico, Central America or Namibia

IES Abroad - funding available to students planning to attend study abroad programs sponsored by the IES organization

MASA Israel Grants and (Need-Based) Scholarships for Study - for Jewish youth to spend one semester or one academic year studying in Israel

Monbukagakusho Scholarships - five different types of awards for non-Japanese nationals to study in Japan

Organization of American States (OAS) Scholarships for Academic Study - for students in participating countries of the OAS; funding to complete graduate or doctoral study at an institution selected in another member country; the USA is a participating member country

Robert B. Bailey Scholarship for Study Abroad - for undergraduate students participating in a CIEE study abroad program; must self-identify as a member of a minority group or a group traditionally underrepresented in study abroad

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship - for students who have completed a bachelor's degree to spend one year pursuing graduate study or study abroad in a country that has a sponsoring Rotary Club

Turkish Coalition of America Study Abroad in Turkey Scholarships for Minority Students (for semester, summer or academic year) - must be an African American, Hispanic/Latino or Native American undergraduate students and a U.S. citizen; have already applied and been accepted to participate in a study abroad program at a Turkish university through an American educational institution or study abroad provider; graduate students granted awards on a case by case basis; sponsored by DiversityAbroad.com

Turkish Coalition of America Study Abroad in Turkey for Armenian American Students (for semester, summer or academic year) - up to 100 scholarships per year for American students of Armenian descent to study abroad in Turkey

United Macedonian Diaspora - scholarships for Macedonian Americans to study abroad in Turkey; competitive internships with the UMD in Washington, DC; and competitive internships with the Macedonian internships in Washington, DC

University of Warwick - funding opportunities to attend Warwick and pursue a master's degree, research or a doctoral degree in the United Kingdom

August:

Foundation for Global Scholars Fall Semester Scholarship - for undergraduate students participating in study abroad programs during fall semester of academic year; four awards with varying criteria

Laura Bush Traveling Fellowship Fall Semester Deadline - (SHORT TERM, PROJECT-BASED TRAVEL ONLY) for college students (undergraduate or graduate) between the ages of 18-25; U.S. citizen eligible for foreign travel; fellowship is intended for American college/university students who express an interest in international collaboration but as of yet had not been afforded many opportunities to travel abroad

September:

Fulbright Fellowship - (UIC STUDENTS APPLY THROUGH OSSP ONLY) for students who have completed a bachelor's degree, a year abroad conducting research in the country of your choice OR teaching English as a foreign language in one of over 40 countries

October:

Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan Spring Semester Awards - funding for undergraduate students to study abroad in Japan during the following spring semester of an academic year

DiversityAbroad.com Spring Semester Scholarships - awards for study abroad during the spring following the deadline through programs and agencies affiliated with the DiversityAbroad.com website

Freeman-ASIA Scholarships for Spring Semester - awards of up to $5,000 for students with financial need studying abroad in East or Southeast Asia

Gilman Scholarships for Spring Semester - (MUST BE A PELL GRANT RECIPIENT) awards up to $5,000 for study abroad with the possibility of an additional $3,000 to study a critical language

Houtan Scholarship for Spring Semester - funding for graduate school based on the interest in and study of the Persian and Iranian culture, language and civilization; could include traveling during study

Humboldt Foundation German Chancellor Scholarship for Prospective Leaders - for American students who have completed a bachelor's degree, have work experience and have show significant potential in becoming a leader in their fields to spend time abroad being mentored in Germany

Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship - for MBA graduates (and other programs) with work experience and a genuine interest in community and public affairs as well as Germany and Europe

Studio Art Centers International (SACI) Florence Spring Semester Scholarships - for undergraduate students in the arts studying abroad at the campus in Florence, Italy

November:

American-Scandinavian Foundation - funding for one year of research or study in a country/the countries of Scandinavia

Critical Languages Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes - all-expenses-paid scholarships to study critical languages abroad for the summer

Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program - for Americans with bachelors' degrees; opportunity to live in Japan and teach English for a minimum of two years

December:

Blakemore Foundation Language Grants - fund a year of advanced language study abroad for college graduates using an East or Southeast Asian language in their careers.

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals - for young adults aged 18-24 looking to gain international experience in their fields (business, technical, vocational or agricultural students)

NSEP Boren Scholarship - (UIC STUDENTS APPLY THROUGH OSSP ONLY) for current undergraduate students pursuing a study abroad program outside of Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand who are studying a language and a topic critical to national security

Pasona Internship Program - two-month program held over the summer to intern with a Japanese company; undergraduate and graduate students

January:

Cambridge NIH Partnership Program - for students interested in biomedical research; program in cooperation with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) culminating in an M.D./Ph.D. from the United States and a D.Phil. or Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom

DAAD - for undergraduates, recent graduates and current graduate students to study abroad in Germany

Foundation for Global Scholars Spring Semester Scholarship - for undergraduate students participating in study abroad programs during spring semester of academic year; four awards with varying criteria

Harriet Woolley-Fondation des Etats-Unis in Paris - for students who have completed an undergraduate degree or have even begun graduate study in painting, graphic design, printmaking, sculpture, and instrumental or vocal music; nine-month residency in Paris to continue study

Killam Fellowships for Study Abroad - Forty scholarships (40) of $5,000 per semester for U.S. citizens to spend one semester or a full academic year studying at a university in Canada

Kosciuszko Foundation Year Abroad Program - for undergraduate sophomores, juniors and seniors to spend an academic year abroad in Poland at Jagiellonian University

Oxford NIH Partnership Program - for students interested in biomedical research; program in cooperation with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) culminating in an M.D./Ph.D. from the United States and a D.Phil. or Ph.D. from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom

Whitaker International Fellows Program in Bioengineering - for students who have already completed a bachelor's or master's degree, or are currently enrolled in a PhD program, to undertake a project abroad for one year in bio/biomedical engineering

February:

Chiba University in Japan - (FOR UIC STUDENTS ONLY) three (3) scholarships available to UIC students who are planning on attending the student exchange program through the UIC Office of International Affairs during the following academic year; fall, spring or academic semester applicants must ALL apply

Sons of Italy Study Abroad and Special Scholarships - for U.S. citizens of Italian descent in their junior or senior year of undergraduate study going abroad to Italy or studying Italian during the fall term of the following year; majoring or minoring in Italian language studies at an accredited academic institution

March:

Anna Sobol Levy Foundation Fellowship - for graduating seniors, recent graduates and current graduate students; U.S. citizens under the age of 30; have studied military studies, economic geography, international relations, political science or history; interested in career goals in the armed services, diplomatic corps, international relations, or government or public service; for one year of study at the Rothberg International School of Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel

Fulbright UK Summer Institutes - a 3-to-6-week summer program at a world-class UK university or cultural institution; immersive academic, cultural and social experience for freshman or sophomore American students who wish to deepen their knowledge of the United Kingdom and its diverse population whilst developing their communication, research and presentation skills

Gilman Scholarships for Fall, Academic Year and Summer Programs - (MUST BE A PELL GRANT RECIPIENT) awards up to $5,000 for study abroad with the possibility of an additional $3,000 to study a critical language

Lemmermann Foundation Scholarship for Italian Study - for master's and doctoral students to undertake language and humanities studies in Rome, Italy, whose time in the country is needed for their graduate research

Spanish Ministry of Education North American Language and Culture Assistants - over 2,000 openings all over Spain to be a paid assistant to support English or French teachers in language and culture classes for one academic year (Oct-June)

Studio Art Centers International (SACI) Florence Fall Semester Scholarships - for undergraduate students in the arts studying abroad at the campus in Florence, Italy

ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship - for undergraduate or graduate students, conduct research at a public university in Switzerland for 2-3 months

April:

AustraLearn Summer Scholarship Program - scholarship for attending a summer program via AustraLearn in Australia, New Zealand or Oceania

Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan Fall Semester Awards - funding for undergraduate students to study abroad in Japan during a fall or academic year

DiversityAbroad.com Fall or Academic Year Scholarships - awards for study abroad during the fall or academic year following the deadline through programs and agencies affiliated with the DiversityAbroad.com website

Foundation for Global Scholars Summer Semester Scholarship - for undergraduate students participating in study abroad programs during summer term of academic year; four awards with varying criteria

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Scholarships - awards of $1,000 given to 45 undergraduate students annually across the U.S. for study abroad during the summer, fall, spring or full academic-year following the application deadline; members and non-members of PKP are eligible to apply

May:

Ozyegin University Summer Program in Turkey (NOT affiliated with UIC Study Abroad) - four-week summer program in Istanbul designed to provide international students (e.g. Americans) an opportunity to learn about Istanbul’s pivotal role in history, as well as the Ottoman Empire and Turkish literature with an analysis of formation of modern Turkish identity; scholarships for program costs available to minority students (African Americans, Latinos and Native Americans)

June:

Scotland Saltire Scholarships - up to 200 awards given annually; £2000 towards the tuition fees of a one year Masters course at any of Scotland’s higher education institutions; awards given to students from the following countries: China, India, Canada and the USA

Houtan Scholarship for Fall Semester - funding for graduate school based on the interest in and study of the Persian and Iranian culture, language and civilization; could include traveling during study
