Important
Notes: Participants should have completed general coursework
in their target internship field either at the community
college
or
university level at the time of application.
Eligibility: Must be
a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; between the ages of 18-24
at the start of the program; have at least a high school diploma;
have clear career goals and some work experience; a strong
interest in international affairs and Germany, while maintaining
a strong American identity;, and demonstrate flexibility, independence,
and diplomacy. CBYX is particulary interested in students with
business, engineering, agricutural or other technical/vocational
backgrounds.
Description: The
Congress-Bundestage Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals
program is intended primarily for young adults in business,
technical,
vocational,
and agricultural
fields, though applicants from all fields are encouraged to
apply. 75 Americans and 75 Germans participate in the program
each year. For American
participants, the 12-month program begins in late July, and
consists of 2 months of intensive
German language training in Germany; 4 months classroom instruction
at a German University or College of Applied Sciences; and
a 5-month internship in their career field.
The CBYX program covers the participant's
payment of international airfare; local transportation and
stipend; language training and study
costs; orientation,
mid-year and final seminars; health and accident insurance;
and host family compensation or other accomodation costs during
study
portion of the program.
Student participants are responsible
for their personal expenses ($300-$500/month); active involvement
in the search for an internship position; personal community
integration in Germany; and diplomatic representation of the
United States while abroad.
