Eligibility: The applicant must be a US citizen and an undergraduate in good academic standing who is receiving a Federal Pell Grant. The applicant must also be applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit at the student’s accredited institution of higher education in the US.

Description: The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program aims to broaden the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. The scholarship can be used to study abroad in any country except Cuba or a country on the State Department’s current travel warning list for a semester or academic year.

Summer programs that are AT LEAST FOUR (4) WEEKS IN LENGTH are also eligible.

The program strongly encourages students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside Western Europe and Australia.

The award provides up to $5,000 in funding for students participating in a study abroad program up to one year in length. A $3,000 Critical Language Enhancement award is also available for students planning to study a critical language while abroad.
