Mary B. Bialas Scholarship in Honor of Margaret Davies ($500)

Eligibility: Applicants must be a Gender and Women’s Studies minor or an undergraduate student who has taken GWS classes, and should have demonstrated a commitment to women and/or children’s issues and actively worked to improve the lives of women and children. Applicants must also submit two letters of recommendation and a personal essay (500-750 words) describing their commitment to improving the lives of women and/or children.

Gender and Women’s Studies Undergraduate Prize

Eligibility: Students must have completed (or currently be completing) the requirements for the minor in Gender and Women’s Studies and must have a grade point average of 2.5/4.0 GPA or higher. Applicants should submit the following materials: an application form, two letters of recommendation (one from a UIC faculty member), and a personal essay describing how Gender and Women’s Studies has contributed to his or her education and preparation for life after graduation (3-6 typed pages, double-spaced, 12 point font). Include a description of your activities regarding women and gender issues.

Description: This is a merit-based prize awarded to one outstanding GWS Minor. Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to feminist activism on campus and/or in the community. The winner will receive a certificate of recognition, a monetary award of $150, and notice among the University’s award winners.

Gender and Women’s Studies Graduate Prize

Important Notes: Application materials should be sent to: Norma Moruzzi, Director of Graduate Studies, UIC Gender and Women’s Studies Program, 1804 University Hall, 601 S. Morgan, Chicago, IL 60607

Eligibility: Applicants should submit the following materials: a one to two page letter describing how the candidate has used or advanced Gender and Women’s Studies scholarship and/or goals for social change (the letter should explain the basis of the candidate’s application and introduce the supporting material); up to 30 pages maximum (double-spaced, 12 point font) of supporting material, such as a scholarly paper, portion of thesis or dissertation, grant proposal, description of organizational campaign or other activist project related to women or gender, sample of creative work in any genre, statement of pedagogical philosophy, etc.; a c.v.; and two letters of recommendation (in sealed, signed envelope) with at least one coming from a UIC faculty member.

Description: This prize is awarded annually to one outstanding GWS graduate concentrator in recognition of the student’s commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship in Gender and Women’s Studies. The winner will receive a certificate of recognition, a monetary award of $150, and notice among the University’s award winners.
