Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship

Website: http://www.woodrow.org/newcombe/

Newcombe application deadline: November 1

Important Notes: Newcombe Fellows may not accept other awards which provide similar benefits. They may undertake no more than six hours of paid work a week during the tenure of the fellowship and only with the written permission of the director of the program.

Eligibility: Applicants must be candidates for Ph.D. or Th.D. degrees in doctoral programs (with ethical or religious values at the center of the thesis) at graduate schools in the United States. Candidates must fulfill all pre-dissertation requirements by November 26, annually, including approval of the dissertation prospectus, and expect to submit completed dissertations by August. These awards are made to Ph.D. candidates who are in the writing stage of the dissertation. Usually, this means that fieldwork or other research is complete and writing has begun.

Description: Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships award up to $18,000, and are designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences. In addition to topics in religious studies or in ethics (philosophical or religious), dissertations might consider the ethical implications of foreign policy, the values influencing political decisions, the moral codes of other cultures and religious or ethical issues reflected in history or literature.
