Eligibility: Only U.S. citizens are eligibile to apply. Applicants must be enrolled in, or applying to, a graduate program. All proposals must include the following: language study, study of an area or culture, and study outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

In general, candidates should have a good academic/career related reason to study in the country they choose.

Description: The National Security Education Program (NSEP) is a unique scholarship opportunity for U.S. graduate students to study abroad. It seeks to address the need to increase the ability of Americans to communicate and compete globally by knowing the languages and cultures of other countries.

The NSEP awards fellowships to American graduate students for study of world regions critical to U.S. interests. Awards are made for a minimum of one and a maximum of six academic semesters (24 months). Overseas study is based on program expenses for a maximum of $12,000 per semester for up to two semesters. The level of support for domestic study is flexible depending on the individual requirements of each applicant. The total maximum level of support for a combined domestic and overseas program is $30,000.

Applicants design their own programs and may combine domestic language and cultural study with overseas study.

NSEP Scholarship recipients incur a service agreement requiring that they, "enter into an agreement to work ina national security position as a priority or, secondarily, to work in the field of higher education in the area of study for which the scholarship was awarded." Frequently, students find that they may "pay back" their time through a position as a graduate assistant or professor at an institution of higher education. NSEP is willing to work with students to find ways to fulfull the service requirement.
