Science and Math Scholarships

Unless otherwise noted, the Office of Special Scholarship Programs at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) does not administer or sponsor the programs listed on its website. The content of these pages are merely a guide for current undergraduate and professional school students at UIC. The Actuarial Foundation Actuary Diversity Scholarship - for Black/African American, Hispanic, Native North American and Pacific Islander students; must be a full-time undergraduate students pursuing a degree that may lead to a career in the actuarial profession; awards $1,000 to high school seniors applying for freshmen year; $2,000 to college freshmen applying for sophomore year/sophomore applying for junior year; and $3,000 to college juniors applying for senior year

American Chemical Society Scholarships - awards for undergraduate and graduate students in the chemical fields

Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) - search engine for paid internships related to the environment

Math for America Newton Fellowship Program - for students who have completed a bachelor's degree with significant coursework (major, minor) in mathematics; teaching placements and paid master's degree in Berkeley, Los Angeles, and San Diego, CA; Washington, DC; New York City; Boston, MA; and Utah

National Geographic Young Explorers Grants - funds for projects in research, conservation or exploration

Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE)- scholarship, fellowship and internship opportunites for undergraduates and graduates in the sciences, math and engineering

Pilot International Foundation Scholarships - for students interested in working with people with disabilities, brain disorders

Pilot International Becky Burrows Memorial Scholarship - for graduate or undergraduate students preparing for a second career, re-entering the job market or obtaining additional training in their current field; their career path must pertain to assisting those with brain-related disorders or brain-related disabilities

Pilot International Marie Newton Sepia Memorial Scholarship - for students studying at the master's or doctorate level who are preparing for a career helping children with brain-related disorders or brain-related disabilities

Society of Automotive Engineers Scholarships - various awards for engineering students pursuing careers related to the automotive industry at the freshman, upperclassman undergraduate and graduate levels

Society of Women Engineers Scholarships - various awards for female students in all the fields of engineering, at the freshman and upperclassman undergraduate level and the graduate level

Teach for America - for students who have recently completed or will complete a bachelor's degree before the next academic year; placement in high schools in urban centers across the U.S. for a minimum of two years

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Scholarships and Internships - nation wide opportunities for research participation, fellowships, scholarships, training, and internship programs for undergraduates, grads, postdocs, and faculty in the sciences associated with DOE

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship - for undergraduate students interested in energy-related research positions at various labs across the country within the DOE; positions available for fall, spring and summer

U.S. National Institutes of Health Directory of Grants & Fellowships in Global Health Sciences - resources for international students interested in study in the U.S. in health sciences

Woodrow Wilson Indiana Teaching Fellowship - for college seniors, recent graduates and career changers in the STEM disciplines; earn master's degree in education and teaching certification in Indiana for teaching placement in high-need urban or rural secondary school

National Academies Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program - research internships for rising or current graduate students in social sciences, health sciences, life sciences, physical sciences, engineering, law, and public health

Sigma Xi Research Society (FALL DEADLINE) - grants in aid of research (science and engineering); awards for astronomy and vision-related research

Whitaker International Undergraduate Scholarship Program (SPRING TERM DEADLINE) - for second, third and fourth year biomedical engineering students from U.S. institutions to study biomedical engineering abroad for one semester or an academic year; up to $7,500 scholarship for one semester/academic term or up to $10,000 scholarship for the academic year

Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Foundation Disabled Veterans Scholarships for Spring Semester - awards of $2,500 each for active-duty service personnel, honorably discharged U.S. military veterans, reservists, and National Guard personnel who are disabled because of wounds received during active-duty combat service in Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan or Iraqi Freedom Operations; must be an undergraduate student studying electrical, aerospace, systems or computer engineering; computer engineering technology; computer network systems; information systems security; computer information systems; information systems management; technology management; electronics engineering technology; computer science; physics; mathematics; or science or mathematics education

Ford Foundation Fellowships - (CONTACT OSSP IF INTERESTED) meant to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students; Alaska Natives (Aleut, Eskimo and other Indigenous People of Alaska); African Americans; Mexican Americans or Chicanos(as); Native American Indians; Native Pacific Islanders (Hawaiian/Polynesian/Micronesian); and Puerto Ricans

Goldwater Scholarship - (UIC STUDENTS APPLY THROUGH OSSP ONLY) for sophomores or juniors conducting research in science, math and engineering and plan to make research an integral part of their future careers

The National GEM Consortium Fellowship - engineering, natural and physical sciences; for master's and PhD-level work; African American, Native American Indian, and Hispanic students

Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowships - for graduating seniors and current graduate students pursuing PhD studies in the biological, physical or engineering sciences

National Physical Science Consortium (NPSC) Fellowships - emphasizes recruitment of women and underrepresented minorities into doctoral degree programs within the physical sciences, biochemistry, computer science, and related fields of science and engineering

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship - funding for graduating college seniors or first-year graduate students pursuing doctoral degrees in physical and life sciences, mathematics, engineering, and social sciences

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency STAR Fellowships for Graduate Environmental Study - supports master's and doctoral students in environmental studies; students can pursue degrees in traditionally recognized environmental disciplines as well as other fields such as social anthropology, urban and regional planning, and decision sciences; up to $42,000 per year in support

American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers Scholarship Program - scholarships for students in degree programs related to HVAC-R engineering and technology

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships - graduate fellowships in math, ocean, physical, biological and engineering sciences

UNCF Merck Science Initiative Scholarship Program - for African American college juniors majoring in the life or physical sciences and biomedical research

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Undergraduate Fellowships - for undergraduate sophomores pursuing environmental studies (can be from a variety of different fields); receive support for junior and senior years, as well as a summer internship with EPA between junior and senior year; up to $17,000 per year and $7,500 in internship support

DAAD-RISE Summer Internship Program - summer research internships in Germany for undergraduates in the sciences and engineering

Knowles Foundation Teaching Fellowships - for individuals who have completed a bachelor's degree in math, physical science or biological science and are committed to teaching one or more of those subjects at the high school level

Mass Media Science & Engineering Program (AAAS) - internships for undergraduate, graduate and post-grad students from the sciences, math and engineering to do internships at media outlets during the summer

NIH Heart, Lung & Blood Institute Biomedical Research Training Program - for underrepresented undergraduates and graduate students, paid research training at NIH over 2 years

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship - for undergraduate sophomores majoring in fields that related to oceanic and atmospheric science (e.g. math, engineering, computer science, teacher education)

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Computational Science Graduate Fellowship - for exceptional college seniors and first/second-year graduate students planning uninterrupted PhD study in physical, engineering, computer, mathematical, or life sciences

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Undergraduate Scholarship - (NOT OFFERED IN 2012) for current, continuing undergraduate students in their second year of a four-year program or the third-year of a five-year program, majoring in a homeland security science, technology, engineering or mathematics (HS-STEM) field which is a STEM field with coursework and/or research relevant to a homeland security research area

Whitaker International Fellows Program in Bioengineering - for students who have already completed a bachelor's or master's degree, or are currently enrolled in a PhD program, to undertake a project abroad for one year in bio/biomedical engineering

February:

American Chemical Society Women Chemists Committee/Eli Lilly Travel Award - funding for undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral female chemists to travel to meetings to present the results of their research

American Meteorological Society Scholarships and Graduate Fellowships - outstanding undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a career in the atmospheric and related oceanic or hydrologic sciences

Congressional Black Caucus Foundation General Mills Health Scholarship - for students preparing to pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree full-time OR a current full-time student in good academic standing at an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in the fields of medicine, engineering, technology, nutrition, or other health-related studies; minimum 2.5 GPA on 4.0 scale and exhibit leadership ability and participate in community service activities

Google Anita Borg Scholarship - for female graduating college seniors or current graduate students in computer engineering, computer science and other related technical fields

International Undergraduate Studentship Programme - unique opportunity to spend 8 weeks in the summer in Norwich, UK, on a research program at one of three labs; students receive free accommodations plus weekely stipend; students in first or final year of study NOT eligible

Jewish Federation Academic Scholarship Program - for Jewish students interested in math, physical and life sciences, additional fields

Microsoft Scholarships - undergraduate students with demonstrated interest in computer science and from other relevant fields, such as electrical engineering, math, or physics; students also complete an internship with the company; general, women's, minority and students with disabilities scholarships

NASA Graduate Student Reseachers Program - for rising or current graduate or doctoral students pursuing master's or PhD degrees in science, math, and/or engineering

NASA-UNCF Harriett Jenkins Predoctoral Fellowship - for college seniors or current graduate students who are women, minorities or persons with disabilities who are pursuing master's and PhD degrees in the STEM disciplines

National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program - competitive scholarships to exceptional undergraduate students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to biomedical, behavioral, and social science research careers at the NIH

Paul D. Doolen Graduate Scholarship for the Study of Aging - (FOR UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS STUDENTS ONLY) scholarships of up to $5,000 each may be awarded to two graduate students in their second year of study, or beyond, whose principal scholarly interest is in the field of aging; one student will be chosen from the biological-biomedical sciences and the other from the behavioral-social sciences

Scholarship Association for UIC - over 50 awards, for various majors; undergraduate and graduate students, ranging from $500-$5,000; for current, continuing, full-time UIC students only

Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) - summer internship in environmental studies for undergraduate, graduate or recently-graduated students

Udall Scholarship for Undergraduates - (APPLY THROUGH OSSP ONLY) for undergraduates in their penultimate year in college pursuing a curriculum and/or a career in science and/or engineering and the environment

University of Montana | Summer Undergraduate Research Program - 10-week summer program (end of May through beginning of August) for undergraduates interested in environmental health sciences, providing extraordinary opportunities to learn from experts about the philosophy and practice of conducting current biomedical research; limited to 6 students per summer

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Environmental Management Studies Fellowship Projects - funding to perform environmentally-based projects related to undergraduate and graduate students' majors

March:

American Chemical Society Minority Scholars Program - high school seniors and continuing undergraduate students intent on majoring in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or a chemically related field; African American, Hispanic and Native American students

Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Enviornmental Studies Scholarship - two awards of $10,000 each to minority and women college students pursuing a degree in environmental science or other related fields of study; must have junior class standing in college with a declared major in environmental science or a related field, with a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale and be a U.S. citizen or legal U.S. resident

Hispanic College Fund College and Career Institute Google Scholarship - for full-time undergraduate juniors and seniors and full-time graduate students of Hispanic descent in computer science or computer engineering programs; award of $10,000 and expenses-paid trip to Google HQ in California during summer; must be U.S. citizen or permanent residents

Hispanic College Fund College and Career Institute Scholarships for STEM Majors - for full-time undergraduate and graduate students of Hispanic descent majoring in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics field; awards for U.S. citizens and permanent residents with a GPA of 3.0 or better

Illinois Society of Professional Engineers Scholarships - (STUDENTS AT ILLINOIS UNIVERSITIES ONLY) for junior and senior undergraduate students in engineering; must have a "B" average or better and demonstrate financial need

Los Alamos National Laboratories MBA-Technology Internships - for current MBA students interested in developing science and technology for the private sector from the work of the inventors in the goverment sector; undergraduate degree in science or engineering preferred but not required

Lupus Foundation of America Gina M. Finzi Memorial Summer Fellowship - award of $2,000 to spend the summer researching in the areas of basic, clinical, translational, epidemiological, or behavioral research relevant to lupus; preference to graduate or medical students (those who have earned a baccalaureate degree before fellowship begins)

National Institutes of Health (NIH) Summer Internship Program - paid summer internships in biomedical research for students at all levels (high school, undergrad and graduate/professional school)

American Association of Candy Technologists John Kitt Memorial Scholarship - for undergraduate sophomores, juniors or rising seniors studying food science, chemical or biological science or a related field with a demonstrated interest in confectionery technology

National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) STEM Targeted Majors Scholarship Fund - a one-time educational grant of $2,500 and an opportunity to intern with a corporate NHCSL partner; must be at least a sophomore, a U.S. citizen, and of Hispanic descent

The Entertainment Software Association Foundation Scholarship - scholarships for full-time undergraduate study at accredited four-year colleges and universities in the USA; up to (30) scholarships of $3,000 each will be awarded annually, 15 to graduating high school seniors and 15 to current college students; must be women or minority students, pursuing degrees leading to careers in computer and video game arts (high school seniors must already be accepted into a program), maintaining a GPA of 2.75 or above on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent), and be US citizens

June:

Automotive Hall of Fame Scholarships - range of scholarships for incoming freshmen and upper-level undergraduate students, all of which are based on financial need with a usual minimum GPA requirement of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale; for students with genuine interest in a career in the automotive industry 

BF Goodrich Collegiate Invention Competition - prizes for original inventions at the undergraduate and graduate levels

Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation Grants - grants of up to $10,580 (a symbolic amount representing the cost of the Spirit of St. Louis) to men and women whose individual initiative and work in a wide spectrum of disciplines furthers the Lindberghs' vision of a balance between the advance of technology and the preservation of the natural/human environment

July:

Elmhurst Garden Club Scholarships - (FOR ILLINOIS RESIDENTS ONLY) awards for college juniors, seniors or graduate students majoring in horticulture, environmental studies, biology, botany and/or other related sciences; to encourage the advancement and stimulate an interest in horticulture through education

Women in Defense HORIZONS Scholarship - for female undergraduate and graduate students in a variety of fields, ultimately interested in a career related to defense and national security
