are regarded as working artists, intent upon practicing and perfecting
their craft. The program offers no degree.
Eligibility:
A degree
is not required for admission, no school of writing is favored
over any other, and chronological age is not a consideration.
Description:
Every year the Stanford Creative Writing Program awards five new
fellowships in poetry and five new fellowships in fiction. Fellowships
are awarded for two years, contingent upon satisfactory performance.
Fellowships include a living stipend of $22,000 and required workshop
tuition of approximately $6,500, totaling $57,000 for the two-year
period. As a Stanford Writing Fellows are required to attend and
contribute to two writing workshops per week and to work seriously
on their own craft. A submission for the poetry fellowship should
include a manuscript of poems 10 to 15 pages in length. A submission
for fiction should include two short stories, or one short story
and a novel excerpt, or a novel excerpt, none of which should
exceed 9000 words in total.
