Saul Weiner Biography
Dr. Weiner, Professor of Medicine, Pediatrics and Medical Education in the College of Medicine, is a graduate of Harvard College, Dartmouth Medical School, and the University of Chicago with board certification in internal medicine and pediatrics. Since coming to UIC in 1997 he has served variously as Program Director of the Combined Residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Division Head of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Vice-Head of the Department of Pediatrics and, more recently, as Senior Associate Dean for Educational Affairs in the College of Medicine. As Senior Associate Dean Dr. Weiner led a major curricular reform, aligning the four regional campuses' educational programs, introducing learner- centered educational methods, a customized learning management system and computer based testing. At the campus level he serves as chair of the Education Committee of the IT Governance Council.
Dr. Weiner is a prominent researcher in the areas of access to health care, medical decision making, medical errors, and the evaluation of patient-centered care. His publications include studies of how large health care organizations manage uninsured patients and on the performance of clinicians at addressing contextual factors in patients’ lives when planning their care. In 2013 he received the UIC Distinguished Researcher of the Year award in the Clinical Sciences.
He was appointed Vice Provost for Planning and Programs in January 2013.
