About APMP

Why Mentoring for Academic Professionals?

In spring 2006, the Academic Professionals subcommittee of the Chancellor′s Committee on the Status of Women (CCSW–AP) held a mentoring panel workshop. The premise was to ascertain how interested Academic Professionals were in a mentoring program. The consensus was that we were VERY interested both to be mentored and to be mentors. Since then the CCSW in conjunction with the Academic Professional Advisory Committee (APAC) has worked on developing a mentoring program, finding it a home and finally bringing it to the staff that are most deserving of a mentoring program, those specifically in the Academic Professional community. In fall 2009, we will launch the pilot program.

Much inspiration and help that Academic Professionals receive come from other Academic Professionals who are willing to share and those who come together in groups like the CCSW–AP and APAC. The most significant resource contribution in the market place comes from Academic Professionals: it is inexpensive, viable and it′s Academic Professionals giving back to one another. We are a huge resource pool and it is time to share our knowledge with one another.

The mentorship program is a creative and innovative attempt to start to think about building in supervisory, departmental, and institutional consideration for our advancement and our longevity.

We all need to be acknowledged as vital resources – and not just with more work in this ever shrinking resource/personnel atmosphere. It′s a creative and innovative concept – using resources that already exist – the Academic Professionals at UIC!

If you are interested in the program as a mentor or protégé, please send a note to apmp_committee@uic.edu.
