Authentication of Diplomas and Transcripts
Have you graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago? Does your country require that you have your diploma and/or official transcripts "authenticated" by an agent of the U.S. government before it will be accepted by your country?
This process is often referred to as an Apostille, which is the legalization of a document for international use under the terms of the Hague Convention (see note).
To submit a request for Apostille/Authentication:
Mail-In:
Mail in your original diploma to the address listed below along with a signed letter requesting Apostille/Authentication. The charge for each request is $5.00. Please include a check or money order made payable to the University of Illinois at Chicago for this fee.
- The turn around time for completing certifications by mail is approximately 3-5 working days from the date the request is received.
Or you if you prefer to keep the original diploma you can submit a request for another diploma. The cost of a replacement or duplicate diploma is $25. Please include a check or money order made payable to the University of Illinois at Chicago for this fee.
- Fill out the form, "Request for Replacement or Duplicate Diploma". This form needs to be notarized by a notary public, returned to us with the fee of $25 per diploma and the 'Authentication or Apostille checked off on the form.
- The turn around time for the ordering of another diploma can be 3-4 weeks depending on current UIC Diploma production.

Walk-In:
Bring in your diploma to the Registration and Records Office and submit a request for the Apostille/Authentication on your diploma.
- The office is located at in the Student Service Building on 1200 West Harrison, Chicago, Illinois between 8:30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- The charge for each request is $5.00. Please include a check or money order made payable to the University of Illinois at Chicago for this fee. If paying by cash please have exact change
- If you decided to come in and drop off your request the turn around time for completing this certification is approximately 48 hours.
In either options the University portion is only 1 step that needs to be completed for the Apostille process. After the University completes their step, you the student have a couple of options available.
- Submit with your request to the University two pre-paid envelopes along with a check made payable to the Secretary of State.
- One envelope needs to be addressed from you to the Secretary of State, along with a letter from you requesting Authentication
- The second envelope would be addressed back to you from the Secretary of State.
- Submit with your request a self-addressed pre-paid envelope
- Once you have received the form you can then mail it to the Secretary of State.
- Pick up your request from our office and take the form directly to the Secretary of State in Downtown Chicago, they accept walk-ins.

*It is imperative that you verify the specific documents and authentication required by the receiving country. More information regarding authentication of American academic credentials for use abroad is available at the U.S. Department of State website . For those countries that do not recognize the Hague Convention or that do not accept the apostille, the U.S. Department of State has an Office of Authentications which can provide a federal authentication. Please note: if federal authentication is required, you must be sure to request the documents be returned to you, in order for you to complete the process.
