Summer Session Only
Special Instructions for International Applicants
If you are an international student and wish to take undergraduate courses on a nondegree status at UIC this summer only, you can apply as a Summer Session Only student. In addition to the general requirements listed in the online Summer Session Only Application Instructions, international students attending UIC's Summer Session must follow the guidelines below.
If you wish to apply to UIC as a degree seeking undergraduate student, please review the Transfer Applicant Instructions. If you are interested in taking graduate level courses, please review the Graduate Applicant Instructions.
Note: If you are only interested in taking ESL (English as a Second Language) courses at UIC, please see the information at the bottom of this section under "English as a Second Language."
Visa Requirements for Nondegree Summer Session Only Students
International students are welcome to apply as Summer Session Only students. However, because you are admitted as a nondegree student, UIC cannot provide international Summer Session Only students with immigration documents such as the I-20 or DS-2019. In order to attend our summer session, you must be a continuing student at another school in the U.S. and already have valid non-immigrant status. Below are guidelines for students in more common visa categories; if your category is not listed below, please contact the Summer Session Office to determine if you are eligible for the program, and what documents you will need in order to apply.
Please read the following guidelines for more information about eligibility:
- F-1: If you are already in the U.S. enrolled as a continuing student at a U.S. college or university on a valid student visa (F-1) and may legally remain in the U.S. for the duration of the UIC summer session in which you wish to enroll, you may attend UIC as a Summer Session Only student. You will need to submit a copy of your I-20, passport, and I-94 to the Office of Admissions. You also will need to have a letter from the Designated School Official (D.S.O.) of your home college or university granting permission to attend UIC for the summer.
- J-1: If you are already in the U.S. enrolled as a continuing student at a U.S. college or university on a valid exchange visitor's visa (J-1) and may legally remain in the U.S. for the duration of the UIC summer session in which you wish to enroll, you may attend UIC as a Summer Session Only student. You will need to submit a copy of your DS-2019, passport, and I-94 to the Office of Admissions. You also will need to have a letter from the Responsible Officer (R.O.) or Alternate Responsible Officer (A. R. O.) of your home college or university granting permission to attend UIC for the summer.
- J-2: If you are already in the U.S. on a valid exchange visitor's dependent visa (J-2) and may legally remain in the U.S. for the duration of the UIC summer session in which you wish to enroll, you may attend UIC as a Summer Session Only student. You will need to submit proof of your J-1's legal status in the U.S., such as a copy of your DS-2019, in addition to your passport, and I-94 to the Office of Admissions.
- H-4: If you are already in the U.S. on a valid temporary worker’s dependent visa (H-4) and may legally remain in the U.S. for the duration of the UIC summer session in which you wish to enroll, you may attend UIC as a Summer Session Only student. You will need to submit a copy of the following documentation to the Office of Admissions: your passport, visa, I-94, and your or your spouse’s I-797 approval notice (the immigration notice stating H-4 status).
Note: Should you have any questions about maintaining your immigration status while at UIC, please contact the college or university that is currently sponsoring you with regard to your immigration status.
