the Harlem Renaissance, the focus of Pamela Franco's talk on "Popular Depictions of African-Americans in 1920s Harlem." A lecturer in art history at UIC, Franco presented and analyzed contemporaneous paintings and illustrations that capture the spirit of Harlem's Renaissance era, a period of "spiritual emancipation" during which the unique culture of African-Americans was exalted and African-American expression redefined.
