Become a Career Peer Mentor


The Career Peer Mentors (CPM) are UIC students who perform a variety of pre-professional part-time work for the UIC Office of Career Services (OCS) and the UIC Student Employment Office (SEO). CPMs are charged with supporting the misson, vision, and values of OCS and SEO by assisting UIC students with their career development and job search needs.

Applicants should have the following basic qualifications by the 2014-2015 academic year:

  • Must be pursuing an undergraduate degree at UIC
  • Registered for at least 6 credit hours at UIC in 2014-2015
  • Completed at least 2 semesters of university coursework at UIC
  • At least 1 year of work experience preferred

Starting slary is $8.56/hour

Under the close supervision and in close conjunction with the manager and superisor(s) the CPMs typically fulfill the following duties:

General

  • Work a minimun of 6 hours a week including nights and weekends and no more than 30 hours per pay period.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings.
  • Participate in project work that supports OCS/SEO initiatives as needed.

Advising

  • Conduct drop-ins for resume and cover letter critiques in OCS/SEO or satelite locations.
  • Introduce students to Focus2, InterviewStream, and UICCareers.com at frop-ins sessions.

Programming

  • Conduct presentations on OCS/SEO main services, general career preparation topics (Resume ad Cover Letter 101; Basic Interview Tips).
  • Participate in outreach efforts and marketing of events, including social media sites.
  • Participate as student members on the Career Advisory Board

Administrative

  • Support front desk at OCS/SEO.
  • Confirm up-comming appointments and conduct student follow-ups.
  • Assist at job fairs and departmental events.

Interested applicants must complete an application and submit it in-person by FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2014, at 5pm to the UIC Office of Career Servuces in the Student Services Building (SSB), Suite 3050, (1200 W Harrison) bwtween 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.
