33% of all business correspondence is written to clarify a previous message that is unclear. 1/3 of American companies' correspondence burden would disappear if everyone simply wrote more clearly.
When you write, what are you thinking about? Are you thinking about yourself and your text, or are you thinking about your reader? When we recognize writing as a conversation with an un-seen listener, we sharpen our focus.
Audience awareness is a habit anyone can develop, and this class will show you how to effectively reach your audience. Learning to "write like a reader" will be a key to your success in the writing process. Instruction will address:
Pre-writing strategies - 25% of writing is done before you "write."
Writing clear e-mails, memos, and business letters
Methods of effective persuasion; bad news letters
Formatting reports with "skimability"
"Keep it succinct and simple" (KISS It)
Revision needs vision
Common writing pitfalls that cloud clarity
Developing the editor within you
We will be offering 3 case studies to provide a context in which you can apply the strategies we discuss. "Hands-on" writing assignments and individual instruction will provide another perspective to help develop your writing skills. All assignments receive personal feedback from the instructor.
